A myocardial infarction, or heart attack, is typically due to the build-up of plaque along the coronary arteries of the heart, causing them to narrow and prevent proper blood supply.〔Van de Werf, F, Bax, J, Betriu, A, Blomstrom-Lundqvist, C, Crea, F, Falk, V, Filippatos, G, Fox, K, Huber, K, Kastrati, A, Rosengren, A, Steg, G, Tubaro, M, Verheugt, Weidinger, F, Weis, M. Eur Heart J 29 (23): 2909-2945.〕 A plaque may break off and form blood clots that disrupt blood flow and inhibit oxygen delivery to the heart leading to a MI.〔 A lack of oxygen and nutrient supply along with a reduction in waste removal in tissue damage that may lead to cell death and myocardial dysfunction.
Coronary angioplasty has been used as a way to restore blood flow following an MI to the heart in order to prevent excessive damage to the tissue.〔 Despite the restoration of blood flow that occurs with this procedure, approximately 30-40% of patients still have poor health outcomes.〔van de Hoef, TP, Mohl, W, Khattab, AA, Wykrzykowska, JJ, Piek, JJ.
